A) I love my work, and we are seeing amazing results. Every day we see men coming to Christ and growing as disciples. That said, we need to do a reality check. We live in a counter-Christian pop culture that ridicules men in general and Christian men in particular. The battle line against biblical manhood is clearly drawn and fiercely contested. As a result, legions of men struggle to sustain what they started and finish the race. It’s as though they’ve enlisted and been issued a weapon that they’ve never learned how to clean and shoot. They’re sitting ducks on the day of battle. That’s what made me want to write How God Makes Men. Q) Why are there so few role models in our culture? Where can men look to find examples of godly fathers, husbands, and working professionals? A) There are TONS of men out there who are getting it right. They’re just not famous. They are quietly working out their faith by seeking God’s plan in the company of a few like-minded men. From Nehemiah, we learn about how God calls men to action—that God makes men by turning what breaks our hearts into a passionate calling to help redeem some broken part of His world. In the story of Job, we gain insight into suffering—that God makes men by allowing us to gain through suffering what we can gain no other way. When we come to Peter, we learn the compelling principle of discipleship—how God makes men by a process of calling, equipping, and sending us so we can call, equip, and send others. Finally, through the passionate story of Paul, we learn about surrender—that God makes men by forging us into humble servants who are increasingly surrendered to the lordship of Jesus. Very good book for challenging men to be the man God wants us to be. The principles all need to be part of our lives. The men of the Bible are real. My favorite is Moses who actually, seven times, tried to get out of what God wanted him to do. The men of the Bible were human, made mistakes and yet, still followed God. They are a great example for us today.

I have been a Christian for many years and this year was a very different year for me. I moved away from my home town of Houston to Dallas, got married and started working after I graduated college in December. Being in the corporate world is something didn't expect. I always thought I was going to be someone who was involved in ministry. I started reading this book and right away it started making me look at my life in a more eternal perspective than I had been looking. I love that it compares us to men in the bible. Because the men in the bible are really just ordinary men who sin, doubt, have good days and bad. God uses them and their situations for His Glory. It is crazy because I know these stories I just didn't look at them the way Patrick Morley discussed them in the book. I started making me look at my life and how he has used me and my life to bring Him the Glory. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!!!

This book is great! I thank God for using Patrick Morley to write this book about how He makes men. The ten epic stories of how God used these men and how we are able to apply these lessons to our lives has inspired me greatly. This book has encouraged me not only to keep living by God's Word but to encourage other men to do so as well. Thanks, and great work! I also purchased "Man Alive" which I just noticed is from the same author. Looking forward to reading it.

In an age where masculinity is scorned and relegated to anachronism, where metrosexual trends are all the fashion and the entire male persona and identity have been stripped of all that we know to be biblical and good, Morley conducts an excellent study of the biblical notion of maleness. This is essential for the effective functioning of happy, fulfilled families and the raising of children. He shows biblical men, flaws and all, and presents a fine picture of what God wants men to be.

The content of this book is valid. It resonated with me while discussing Jib. Yet, it is Sunday School lessons for those new to the faith. Still, the final chapter is challenging and, I feel, should have the first half pasted at the book's beginning. We read this for a men's group and have been pleased with the teachings.

Love the book. Just what I was looking for to interest men's small groups. Consistently crawl through the pages with various groups of men. Rarely finish a chapter in a session! Offers much for thought and conversation as well as prompts questions men face about their lives. Have used it several times, each time with great success and participation. Each of the10 chapters highlight a separate biblical character and develop a major principle all men can benefit from. I believe this book is a very useful mentoring tool whether you are engaged with Christian or non-Christian men. God's principles have no boundaries.

He summarizes the lives of 10 men warts and all lets you know about the lives of some men that you have heard of but probably do not know or just haven't looked into the depths of their stories. The greatest example in this book to me was Gideon.. I knew the name Gideon from a Beatles song I knew the name Gideon from Bibles and hotels but for some reason I had never heard the story of Gideon never read the story of Gideon and it was enlightening. Any man reading this review should read this book. It does not matter what faith you are or even if you have no faith this is a good book.

I have always enjoy Patrick Morley's books! The first book I read was MAN IN THE MIRROR! Since then, I've read many of his books and distributed many in the churches I've pastored. HOW GOD MAKES MEN will be one I will read and re-read. I like his illustrations and his treatment of the Bible.

Recently I finished reading Dr. Lyle’s book, Forensics for Dummies. Truth be told, I bought it because I am an author who likes infuse horror with mystery so crime is a mainstay in my genera. When I was in college, I studied law enforcement and had the opportunity to work as a law enforcement officer on the corrections side. This was a good many years ago and when I was writing my last novel, I realized some of my information was somewhat dated.Dr. Lyle has done a great job in writing an easy to use guide on the basics of forensics. There were a lot of things I already knew. For example, I already knew some basic information on evidence collection. But I still read that section as I found it interesting.He does a great job explaining some of the basics of pathogens, different types of gunshot wounds, and autopsies. There were a lot of things in the book that I either didn’t know, or had forgotten.I really found the section on establishing the time of death particularly interesting. As a fiction author, dealing with time lines can be difficult and it is helpful if you can have something particularly gruesome to explain it.I found this book easy to read, easy to cross reference, and just the right amount of science and places where Hollywood just gets it wrong. It was well written and logically organized. I would highly recommend Forensics for Dummies to anyone interested in the topic of forensics. I know that I will be referencing this book in future writing.

Very comprehensive book. Covers all the bases but is hard reading. Like the case studies though. Pity about the poor grammar.

Other than the book being ripped when I opened the box, the book looks like it contains a lot of really cool information. I just wish it wasn’t damaged. (See photos)

There had to be some kind of vital force, something outside the well understood laws of physics and chemistry. For centuries, the challenge stood, even as scientists discovered cells, organic synthesis, genes and protein structure.Then science reached the nanoscale. In the late 1980s and early 1990s a new class of microscope opened up the world of the nanometer. Individual molecules could be viewed, first statically, then in motion. New techniques could mark individual molecules and tweezers made of light beams opened a new area to experimentation and measurement. At the nanoscale biology, chemistry and physics converge. Living creatures are made of tiny machines.These machines are made of molecules. They operate in a veritable storm of random motion and random collisions, and it is this storm that provides the energy for living motion - cellular motion, genetic manipulation and chemical transport. The second law of thermodynamics has this random motion effectively useless, unable to drive directed activity, but there is a loophole. Energy can be used to destroy information, to forget and reset molecular state. In cells, this energy is provided by ATP losing a phosphorous atom and converting to ADP. It seems insignificant, but at the nanoscale this minuscule jump burns at 7000 degrees. It is these fiery sparks of forgetfulness that drive life's ratchet and make life possible.This book is a biophysicists manifesto. There has been a critical convergence in our understanding of living systems. We can look at the mysterious vital force up close and understand it. We can go to Youtube and watch a myosin molecule walk its track, buffeted by the invisible storm. It's an amazing story, and this book does a wonderful job of bringing this story to anyone with even a basic scientific background. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. We truly live in amazing times.

Wants to know how life began and where organic chemistry becomes purposeful life. This is the book. When I was done, I put it down and said to myself "Well there you have it, now I know how it got this way" . I have spent the last 20 years reading every science book I could find to try to really understand what it is that I'm looking at every day, how the hell did this happen? Well now I know. I may never have to pick up another book again in my life. The author writes in such a pleasant way as to avoid any kind of condescending undercurrent, he knows some stuff would be impossible for guys like me to truly understand without a Phd. in molecular biology or some such discipline, so he does his best to make the incomprehensible engaging. I'd like to have a beer or 6 with this guy - oh, that's right I quit drinking a while back. Somehow, having a window into the line between organic chemistry and self perpetuating living things makes me feel, at long last, that the universe I have been pondering for the last 60 years does make sense, and that this line, like deep time and such concepts, can't be felt at a gut level. But it can be revealed, slowly, to guys like me over time.

This is a wonderful, highly enjoyable, and educational book that explains concepts that are often presented solely via non-transparent mathematical analyses. The author, Peter Hoffmann asks, "How can molecules create the “purposeful” action that characterizes cells and bacteria? How do we go from assemblies of mere atoms to the organized complex motions in a cell?" Hoffmann addresses these issues, explaining complex processes in understandable terms, and uses metaphors very effectively. I particularly enjoyed his explanation of Brownian ratchets using the metaphor of a mythical nanoscale version of Sisyphus pushing a boulder up a hill. Peter Hoffmann is a gifted writer, and this book is a gem that illuminates the physics and biology of life processes skillfully.

I really enjoyed this book. I read it back in 2012, but never seemed to get around to writing a review. It discusses how life takes advantage of physical law to function. Even in the modern world, many people seem to believe in a vital spirit that makes life metaphysically distinct from non-life. I read this alongside several other books to familiarize myself with some of the basics of biology. I was in college studying experimental psychology (with a focus on cognitive neuroscience) with a philosophy minor and was quite interested (and still am) in the debates in philosophy of mind over physicalism. I am a physicalist, so I wanted to really be familiar with some of the bare basics of how life works to make sure I wasn't on shaky grounds. Below are listed a couple other books I read alongside it that those who are interested in this book might also want to read:Wetware: A Computer in Every Living Cell (discusses how single celled organisms process information)What is Life? by Addy Pross (discusses the chemical principles by which life could emerge without getting much into specifics)The Machinery of Life by David S. GoodsellI didn't read it alongside this, but The Extended Phenotype by Richard Dawkins would probably be of interest.

The book remains accessible enough to be of interest to the curious undergrad or general audience, while also elegantly explaining intricate details of bacteriophages in a way that will educate even the most seasoned phage veteran. One example of this is how Youle has renamed the phages within her book, taking inaccessible jargon, such as øFf49, and transforming it into the descriptive and memorably named 'Skinny' phage based on its thin, filament-like structure.

This is a fantastic book full of exciting ideas. If you love learning about the amazing tricks of nature you HAVE to get this book! P.S. It is a much more scholarly and rigorous book than the anthropomorphic title implies.

Technical but easily understood by a layman

I'm not a biologist, but I found this book to be strangely intriguing nevertheless. It delves into life at the micro level more interesting to me than most works of science fiction. The phage, it seems, is a remarkable bit of life that may or may not actually be alive, depending on how one defines the concept of life. The aspect of the book that was most engrossing was the way in which these creatures invade larger host organisms, and then, like the key to some cosmic lock, turn the host's DNA towards their own purposes. The first of these purposes is, of course, self-replication, but that's just the start of the strange odyssey of the phage.If the invasion of a living host organism seems macabre, it must be said also that these entities are responsible for much of the genetic innovation underpinning the evolving process of life. So these infinitely small, and incomprehensibly multitudinous creatures, both destroy life and bring forth new life in the process. So if I understand the thrust of this book correctly, admittedly a stretch for a layman such as myself, it seems the phage is a sort of cross between a magician and an engineer, recreating and redefining life towards it's own elaborate and mysterious ends. The process it uses to accomplish this task is what the book is about and it is indeed the stuff of real life science fiction.

Merry Youle, the Phage Whisperer, is back with another nuanced, insightful, and profound work.This book is both detailed enough for the serious student of viruses and broad enough to engage any newcomer. The glue that binds this book together is the author's deep sense of wonder at the workings of the world that rings through in every sentence, and specifically how viruses - the master manipulators of life - get business done. The author's passion for the subject matter is tangible and refreshing and filled me with a sense of newfound excitement to explore the world more.A real gem.

"Thinking Like a Phage" does what many books on the microbial world fail to do: consider the life cycle of bacteriophages from their perspective rather than that of the humans who study them. Merry Youle's sense of wonder gives each phage a personality that lets her human audience connect with them without overly anthropomorphizing the viruses. Complemented by Leah Pantea's watercolor illustrations and Ben Darby's pen and ink portraits, the textual descriptions of phages and their world of stalking, infecting, and exploiting their prey comes alive. Youle does assume her audience has a small background in basic molecular biology; however, her humor and conversational tone makes this book accessible to those who aren't scientists in the phage field.

I like it. In the spirit of the HHMI SEA-PHAGES educational program, the author has conveyed life-style appropriate names to classic, well-studied phages and to those more recently discovered with intriguing structures, niches or hosts. If you desire a more a more technical monograph on phage biology, seek R. Calendar's "The Bacteriophages". But if you'd like to introduce first year biology students or students and readers of any discipline, this is good place to start. The book covers the molecular biology of several phage types wiithout being over technical. Whether intended or not, the colorful flow of watery blues with earthly browns among the cells and phage imbue the figures with the impression of phage throughout the planet..... which they are! About a third of the time, the key word I'm searching for isn't in here, and I've been reading the NIV ("Never Incorrect Version" ;) ) for 23 years. In its defense, most concordances I've used have let me down sometimes, so this is one is about average on the scale to me. I'm glad I bought it because it fits well in my backpack and helps me as often as most concordances do, but sometimes it surprises me when I can't find popular verses by keyword in it--either the word is missing from the concordance altogether, or the word is there with 20 obscure verses that you had no idea were in the bible even though you read it daily, but not the common one you know is in there SOMEwhere that you want to use now. :)

I have an old KJV concordance and wanted one for the NIV. Apparently the meaing of the word "concordance" has changed. I expected to find the Greek and Hebrew words and their meanings listed for each English word, as well as the location of the English words in the translation. In other words, a study aid.This is merely a list of English words and where they have been used in this translation. What's the point? I can find such a list more easily with any digital search.

I used to carry a small concordance from the back of NIV Study Bible, and this is an expanded edition of it. This provides almost as comprehensive entries and explanations as full size concordance. Since the entries are relatively extensive, it should be sufficient for up to the intermediate stage of the Bible study. Get it and use it!

Altghough this is not an exhaustive concordance, its size makes it quite useful.The only real drawback is that it is paperback, but because of this, the price makes it one of the best values in a full concordance out there.

This NIV Compact Concordance is just perfect in size and is a great addition for anyone who needs to go further into the Word of God. Very good Concordance to help with your Bible Study. Gives a lot of details like a larger Concordance. I recommend this book along with the NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible.

Longer concordance's are more helpful, but for a compact reference book, this one will serve one well. It is easy to carry with you.

I use this volume very often to find portions of scripture my brain only partially remembers. I could do it on line, but I like holding the book--it never times out!
