Review
"I have always said that you can learn more about a person in four hours on a golf course than you can in a day of meetings. Golf exposes how one handles adversity and success and provides a glimpse into someone's personality and integrity. Simply put, the game of golf often unveils the truth about someone. The same could be said for a courtroom, and much like a golf tournament, there are highs and lows in every legal battle. My longtime friend, Tony Jacklin, and author, Shelby Yastrow, understand these similarities and have managed to wonderfully weave them into a fascinating, fictional page-turner." --Jack Nicklaus, World Golf Hall of Famer, 18-time Majors Champion

In the spirit of complete transparency I must declare that I have known one of the authors, Shelby Yastrow, most of my life. I must have been 5 or 6 years old when I delivered the ring to him when he married my Aunt Sybil over 60 years ago. Uncle Shelby has always been the story teller in our family. So much so a new lexicon developed to describe many of his descriptive techniques. Originally I felt obligated by familial responsibility to read this book. I soon discovered it to be a real page turner. The authors really developed the characters in this book. The courtroom suspense and the inside look at the procedures and personality kept me riveted. As "we" awaited the verdict I myself was personally invested in the juries decision. So much so that I was emotionally reacting at it's reading like the rest of the team I had joined. I highly recommend this book.
BAD LIES is a great read. The combination of Professional golf and Constitutional law may appear to be a bad pairing, but Tony Jacklin and Shelby Yastrow have turned them into a great read. You will stay up late at night reading just one more chapter and you’ll be sad when it ends. Thanks Kewanee..
Bad Lies is an addictive and seductively riveting page-turner. The clear winner of this ingeniously crafted smartly paced golf - law - courtroom drama is its reader who will appreciate the authors' ability to connect and build a genuine rapport with them. Yastrow and Jacklin skillfully school us in the rules, workings, psychology, and physicality of golf and law: both are games to be played to be won.
This is a tremendous book. Yastrow is a master storyteller and brings to life what is taking place in the courtroom. I found myself getting so caught up in the story that when other commitments pulled me away from the book, I could not wait to get back to find out what happened. Jacklin's knowledge of the Senior Tour and professional golf generally, also came out throughout the book. I will never watch another golf tournament in the same way. GREAT book !!
This is an interesting novel that illustrates the loop holes of the First Amendment in the context of a court case dealing with a famous golfer being slandered in a sports magazine article. The reporter charges that the golfer in question cheats in tournaments and uses drugs but refuses to reveal who his resources are ( hiding behind the first amendment)The court scenes are intriqing .A good read.
Once I started the book, I couldn't wait to finish. It was that compelling to me. The combination of courtroom drama and inside golf was just perfect. Yastrow has a clever way with words, phrases and telling a story that is both amusing and educational. I highly recommend for anyone interested in law and the first amendment, plus any golf fanatic, too.
This is a very well written book, for both golfers and non-golfers.Also for anyone interested in the law and courtroom back and forth betweenThe prosecution and the defendant. It is a very easy read, and almost impossible to put down. I read the almost 500 page book in 2 days.Highly recommend it. Tony Jaclin insight to his golfing buddies on the tour was priceless.
Yastrow had me hooked from the very first page and didn't let me off the hook, or my rear, until the final page. He created a terrific cast of characters and scenario that blended courtroom and golf course drama with a "who dunnit" intrigue and just the right infusion of humor. Read it, whether you play golf or not. I guarantee enjoyment.
